Computer Science studies

Basic studies in Computer Science with a minor in Electrical Engineering
I passed my intermediate examination on February 26, 1996.
A total of 5 oral examinations (3 in Computer Science and 2 in Mathematics) had to be completed. In my minor subject, Electrical Engineering, I passed 3 written exams during my studies (this was already possible under the old examination regulations).
- Practical Computer Science
1663 - Data Structures [July 12, 1995] - Theoretical Computer Science
1653/4 - Theoretical Computer Science A/B [February 26, 1996] - Technical Computer Science
1703 - Microprogrammed Circuits [September 11, 1995] - Mathematics for Computer Scientists
Part 1: 1182 - Analysis [June 1, 1995]
Part 2: 1183 - Differential Equations, Numerical Methods, etc. [December 14, 1995] - Minor in Electrical Engineering
2110/1 - Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering
2224 - Electromagnetic Fields
2245 - Waves on Wires
Major in Computer Science with minor in Mathematics

I completed my main studies in Computer Science by submitting my thesis at the end of June 2002. On September 23, 2002, I finally held my diploma certificate in my hands. In January 2003, I was awarded the sponsorship prize of the Society of Friends of the FernUniversität as part of the Dies Academicus 2003 (report on page 1 in FernUni Perspektive Nr. 3, provided by ULB Münster) 🇩🇪 Available in German only. .
For practical reasons, I decided after my intermediate examination to switch from Electrical Engineering to Mathematics as my minor subject. In the main course of study, students majoring in Electrical Engineering had to choose one of two options for their exams, neither of which really appealed to me. Thanks to the Computer Science examination regulations of August 18, 1995, it was no problem to switch, as these no longer stipulated — as the previous ones had — that the minor subject in the main course of study had to be the same as in the basic course of study. I have not regretted my decision.
Seminars in the Computer Science major
The examination regulations stipulate that at least two seminars must be completed during the main course of study. I took the first two (and probably also the last two) in the winter semester of 1997/98:
- Seminar 1902 - Program Transformation: Partial Evaluation of a Simple Imperative Language 🇩🇪 Available in German only. (also available for download as a Postscript file)
- Seminar 1908 - World Wide Web: Comparison of HTML Editors 🇩🇪 Available in German only. (also available for download as a Postscript file)
Final examination in Computer Science
I passed my final examination on September 23, 2002.
In total, I had to complete 8 oral examinations (6 in my major subject and 2 in my minor subject) and to write a diploma thesis.
- Practical Computer Science
Part 1: 1802 - Operating Systems [October 16, 1996]
Part 2: 1810 - Compiler Construction [March 18, 1998] - Theoretical Computer Science
Part 1: 1685 - Efficient Graph Algorithms [July 1, 1997]
Part 2: 1824 - Parallel Algorithms [September 9, 1997] - Advanced Subject
Part 1: 1665 - Database Systems [April 23, 1998]
Part 2: 1666 - Databases in Computer Networks [September 15, 1998] - Minor subject Mathematics
Part 1: 1335 - Ordinary Differential Equations [May 27, 1997]
Part 2: 1336 - Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations [October 9, 1997] - Diploma thesis [submitted on June 28, 2002] on the topic Redesign and reimplementation of the system core of the extensible DBMS Secondo 🇩🇪 Available in German only. in the former teaching area Practical Computer Science IV, Prof. Ralf-Hartmut Güting (today: Databases and Information Systems)
Mathematics studies

Basic studies in Mathematics
I passed my intermediate examination on March 23, 2004.
Several Mathematics courses from my Computer Science studies were credited as a minor subject, as was the Computer Science portion. This left me with 4 oral examinations in Mathematics and a proseminar to complete.
- Linear Algebra
1102 - Linear Algebra 1 [April 10, 2003]
1103 - Linear Algebra 2 [September 4, 2003] - Analysis
1133 - Analysis 2 [October 7, 2003] - Probability Theory
1262 - Probability Theory 1 [March 23, 2004] - Proseminar
1092 - Proseminar Analysis [December 7/8, 2002]
Lecture preparation 🇩🇪 Available in German only. on the topic of Numerical Integration
Major in Mathematics
I passed my main diploma examination on October 30, 2007. In November 2008, I was awarded the sponsorship prize of the Society of Friends of the FernUniversität as part of the Dies Academicus 2008 (report on page 1 in FernUni Perspektive No. 26, provided by ULB Münster) 🇩🇪 Available in German only. .
Some of my Computer Science studies, including several Mathematics courses and Computer Science as a minor, were credited, so that I only had to complete two oral exams in Mathematics and two seminars or practical courses.
- Pure Mathematics [December 14, 2004]
1331 - Differential Geometry
1256 - Geometry of the Plane - Elective Mathematics Course [April 17, 2007]
